Hellapenos

I’ve spun through a lot of Thunderkick’s back catalogue over the years, and the studio has a knack for taking a daft premise and giving it just enough polish to charm you. Hellapenos (2023) is exactly that: a slot about sentient chilli peppers going full pantomime-devil. It’s fun. It’s also, if I’m honest, a bit less than the sum of its parts.

Theme & presentation

The pitch is right there in the pun — “hella” plus jalapeño — and the game leans into it with a cast of grinning red chillies sporting little horns and pitchforks, set against a smouldering, cartoon-hellfire backdrop. It’s the usual Thunderkick trick: clean vector art, a warm palette, and a soundtrack that ambles along with a mariachi-tinged swagger. Nothing here is groundbreaking, but it’s genuinely likeable, and the wins pop with a satisfying little flourish. Presentation is comfortably the strongest thing on offer.

How it plays

Hellapenos runs on an unusual 3-3-4-4-4 grid — five reels of varying height — feeding 100 connecting paylines rather than the ways-pays you might expect. In the base game you’re chasing two things: multiplier wilds worth x2, and the Expanding Devil symbols that show up on reels 3, 4 and 5. When a Devil lands as part of a win it expands to fill its whole reel and subs for everything bar the scatter. It’s a tidy mechanic, but base-game hits feel thin and the dead spins pile up quickly — this is a high-volatility machine and it lets you know.

The feature

The headline event is the Bonus Game — Thunderkick’s “flaming Free Spins.” Land three scatters across reels 3, 4 and 5 and you’re awarded 7 free spins. The twist: when an Expanding Devil lands during the round it permanently activates that reel for the rest of the feature, planting a Devil on every subsequent spin and handing you +3 spins (one retrigger per reel, up to nine extra). Stack Devils through multiplier wilds and the values multiply together, running from x2 up to a ceiling of x64 on a payline. When it clicks, it’s a proper crescendo — reels lighting up one by one — but you need those Devils to cooperate, and often they simply don’t. There’s also a bonus buy at 70x if patience isn’t your thing.

Verdict

Hellapenos is charming, well-built and occasionally thrilling in the bonus — but the 5,000x cap is modest for a slot this volatile, and you’ll grind through plenty of nothing to reach it. For a benchmark, Thunderkick’s own 1429 Uncharted Seas offers a famously generous ~98.6% RTP with low volatility, a very different (to my mind kinder) deal; Hellapenos asks you to swallow more variance for a lower ceiling. It’s a perfectly enjoyable session slot, just not one I’d chase.
