Theme & presentation
Thunderkick built Babushkas around the Matryoshka — the Russian nesting dolls — and, credit where due, it’s one of the few times the theme actually does something mechanically rather than just sitting there as wallpaper. The reels are stacked with brightly-painted grannies in ascending sizes, a wild egg, and a mildly unhinged bear who does the heavy lifting. It’s clean, it’s colourful, and it has that unmistakable Thunderkick polish — soft folk-ish audio, crisp animations, nothing garish. It won’t blow anyone’s hair back in 2026, but it hasn’t aged into an eyesore either. Understated, and I mean that as a compliment.
How it plays
Underneath the charm it’s a fairly compact machine: five reels, three rows, 17 fixed paylines. The signature trick is the Symbol Upgrade feature. Land a win and the lower-value neighbours can “upgrade” to match the winning symbol, potentially opening fresh lines, which can cascade as long as new wins keep appearing. It’s a satisfying little chain reaction that makes ordinary spins feel busier than the base pays would suggest. The wild egg on the centre reel is your trigger for the good stuff. Bets run from a modest 10p up to £100, so it flexes from penny-poking to properly reckless.
The feature
The headline act is the trio of Bear features, launched when a wild egg with a star lands on reel three. You get one of three at random: Scare Bear, which upgrades the lowest-value symbols (up to three times); Charm Bear, which bumps every symbol up one level in a single sweep; and Dance Bear, which hands you seven free spins with a guaranteed wild egg on reel three every spin. Fill the whole screen with the same symbol and you trigger a Wipe Win — do it with the top symbol and there’s an extra 100x-stake prize on top. There’s no multiplier ladder in the free spins, which is the honest disappointment here; the guaranteed wilds are the whole appeal. It’s a clever, characterful feature set, just not one built for fireworks.
The numbers, straight
- Max win: 390x stake (confirmed via Thunderkick’s own game page and SlotCatalog; the 100x figure some sites quote is only the Wipe Win prize, not the ceiling)
- RTP: 95.8% — below the 96%+ I’d like to see, notably stingy for a Thunderkick title (a handful of higher tiers exist in the wild, but 95.8% is the studio default)
- Volatility: Reputable sources (Thunderkick, SlotCatalog) list it as low; our catalog’s “medium” tag looks optimistic, so treat this as low-to-medium at most
- Reels/paylines: 5 reels, 3 rows, 17 fixed lines
- Hit rhythm: hit frequency around 29.8% per SlotCatalog — roughly one win every 3.4 spins, so the reels stay lively even when the wins are small
Verdict
Babushkas is a likeable, well-made little slot that leans on personality rather than punch. Released back in 2016, the upgrade cascades and the three Bears give it more going on than its size suggests, and the frequent hits keep boredom at bay. But a 390x ceiling is genuinely modest by modern standards, the 95.8% RTP is on the mean side, and multiplier-free free spins cap the excitement. It’s a pleasant grazing game, not a chaser’s slot — fun to potter with, unlikely to change your night.
SlotWhizz rating: 3.6/5. A charming, competent Thunderkick oldie whose low ceiling and 95.8% RTP keep it firmly in “nice, not essential” territory — and remember the house edge is baked in on every spin, upgrades or not.
