Teen Patti, sometimes called “Indian Poker” or “Flush”, is one of South Asia’s most beloved card games. It is a fixture at Diwali gatherings and family tables, and it has moved online in a big way. This guide covers the rules, the hand rankings, and a few honest pointers — without pretending the game can be beaten.

How the Game Works

Teen Patti uses a standard 52-card deck with no jokers, and is usually played by three to six people. Every player puts in an agreed starting stake (the “boot”) to form the pot. Each player is then dealt three cards face down.

The aim is simple: have the best three-card hand at showdown, or push everyone else to fold before then. Play moves clockwise, and on your turn you either bet to stay in or fold and forfeit your stake.

Hand Rankings (Best to Worst)

Memorise these — they are the backbone of every decision:

  1. Trail / Trio — three of a kind (three aces is the strongest hand).
  2. Pure Sequence / Straight Flush — three consecutive cards, same suit.
  3. Sequence / Run — three consecutive cards, mixed suits.
  4. Colour / Flush — three cards of one suit, not in sequence.
  5. Pair — two cards of the same rank.
  6. High Card — none of the above; highest card plays.

Note that a plain sequence beats a colour here, which trips up players used to standard poker.

Blind vs Seen Play

This is the feature that gives Teen Patti its flavour. You may bet “blind” (without looking at your cards) or “seen” (after looking).

  • A blind player bets the current stake amount.
  • A seen player must bet at least double the current stake.

Playing blind keeps your costs low and your intentions hidden, which is why experienced players often stay blind early. When two players are left, either can call for a “show” to compare hands.

A Few Honest Strategy Notes

Teen Patti rewards patience and discipline far more than bravado, but be clear-eyed: it is a game of incomplete information and chance, and over time the house (in online formats) keeps an edge. No tactic changes that.

  • Fold weak high cards early. Most hands you are dealt are not worth chasing.
  • Use blind play to control your spend when the pot is small and you want cheap information.
  • Watch betting patterns, not faces. Online, the bet sizing is your only tell.
  • Set a loss limit before you sit down and stick to it.
