Baccarat looks intimidating across the casino floor, but it is one of the simplest games to actually play. You are not making clever decisions hand to hand; you place a bet, the cards are dealt to fixed rules, and you find out who won. This guide covers the rules, the three bets, the real odds, and where the house edge sits so you know exactly what you are getting into.

The Aim of the Game

Baccarat pits two hands against each other: the Player and the Banker. Despite the names, you are not “the Player” — you simply bet on which hand will finish closest to a total of nine.

Card values are easy. Aces count as one, cards two through nine are face value, and tens plus all face cards count as zero. When a hand totals ten or more, you drop the first digit: a seven and a six make thirteen, which scores as three. There is no busting and no hitting on demand.

How a Hand Plays Out

Both hands receive two cards. If either the Player or Banker starts on an eight or nine, that is a “natural” and the hand ends immediately. Otherwise, a fixed set of drawing rules decides whether a third card is dealt — and crucially, you never choose. The dealer follows the same script every time, which is why baccarat needs no strategy chart in the way blackjack-style games do. Once the cards are settled, the highest total wins.

The Three Bets and Their Odds

There are three core wagers, and understanding them is the whole game:

  • Banker — wins slightly more often than the Player because of the drawing rules. It usually carries a commission (often around 5%) on wins, which exists precisely because it is the strongest bet.
  • Player — pays even money and wins a touch less frequently than the Banker.
  • Tie — pays much more if the two hands match, but it lands rarely, and the house edge here is far higher than on the other two.

In rough terms, the Banker bet carries the lowest house edge, the Player bet is close behind, and the Tie is the worst value despite its tempting payout. None of these are positive for you over time — the house keeps an edge on every option, and the Tie simply takes more of it.

Why the House Always Stays Ahead

This is the part the shiny payout tables skip. The commission on Banker wins and the unbalanced payout on Ties are deliberate; they guarantee the casino a margin regardless of how the cards fall. No betting pattern, streak-chasing system, or scorecard ritual changes the underlying maths. You can read more on how that margin works in our RTP explained guide and how we assess games in our methodology.

Playing Sensibly

If you enjoy baccarat, the Banker bet is statistically the least costly, but “least costly” is not the same as winning. Treat your stake as the price of entertainment, set a limit before you sit down, and walk when you hit it. You can compare table and slot options on our best-of lists or browse providers to see who builds the versions worth your time. Want help sizing a wager? Our bet calculator does the sums for you.

Baccarat rewards understanding over cleverness — know the odds, pick the better bet, and keep your limits firm.
