Play’n GO have gone back to the sand-dune well again, and this time they’ve bolted a Roman legion onto their Egyptian furniture. Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead is exactly what it sounds like: gilded columns, a brooding sphinx, a few centurions loitering around like they wandered in from a different studio’s slot. Visually it’s slick, I’ll give it that. The gold coins gleam, the reels sit heavy and expensive, and the whole thing has that polished Play’n GO sheen you can set your watch by.

But polish isn’t personality, and I spent most of my session waiting to feel something. It’s handsome the way a stock-photo boardroom is handsome. If you’ve played Legion Gold Unleashed, you’ve essentially seen this already; this is a re-skin wearing a slightly different hat.

How it plays

Standard stuff under the gilding: 5 reels, 3 rows, 25 fixed paylines, with stakes running from 5c up to 100 a spin. Symbols are your usual royals-and-icons split, wilds substitute where you’d expect, and the medium-volatility math means the base game ticks over steadily rather than yanking your bankroll around. There’s a decent rhythm to it, small wins land often enough to keep the reels feeling alive, and the gold-coin symbols dangle the promise of the bonus without paying anything on their own until you collect enough.

It’s competent. It’s also a bit of a metronome. Nothing here surprised me in the base game across a long session.

The feature

Two named features do the heavy lifting. First, Gold Respins - a hold ‘n win. Land 6 or more Gold Coin symbols and you get 3 respins where only coins, Gold Coin Chests, or blanks drop. Every new coin locks and resets your respins to 3, and a Chest collects the values already on screen. Coins carry values from 1x up to 1,000x, and filling the entire grid pays a 1,000x Golden Prize. This is the good bit, when it fires.

Second, Mega Free Spins - three scatters award 5 free spins, each spin planting a Mega 3x3 symbol somewhere on the grid, with a Mega Gold Coin able to kick you into Gold Respins mid-feature. It’s a tidy loop, but 5 spins is stingy, and you’ll blink and miss it more often than not.

Verdict

Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead is a well-dressed rerun. The Gold Respins mechanic is satisfying and the presentation is faultless, but the 3,000x ceiling is modest for a 2024 release, the free spins feel underfed, and the whole package is a near-clone of a game Play’n GO already shipped. I didn’t dislike my time with it; I just never had a reason to keep going. Solidly middle of the road.
