Pirates again. If you’ve reviewed slots for any length of time you develop a twitch every time another galleon rolls onto the reels, and Buckaneers Frenzy (Blueprint Gaming, 2021, via its Reel Time Gaming studio) does absolutely nothing to cure it. We get the barnacled treasure chests, the grizzled captain, the parrot, the obligatory cannon fire when a win lands. It’s competent, it’s colourful, and it is about as original as a pub quiz question. The 5-reel, 3-row cabinet is clean and reads well on mobile, the shanty-lite soundtrack loops without becoming actively hostile, and the coin-sack symbols glow nicely when they matter. That’s genuine praise, but let’s be honest: nothing here will make you screenshot it.

How it plays

Ten fixed paylines across a 5x3 grid — no ways-pays gimmickry, no cluster nonsense, just old-fashioned left-to-right lines. Stakes run from about 0.10 up to 10 a spin. Base game is exactly what you’d expect: low card royals, a few themed pirates, and a scatter ship you’ll be staring at hopefully far more often than it actually shows up. The medium volatility means the base game trickles rather than pounds — you’ll tick along, occasionally clip a decent line win, and mostly just be grinding toward the bonus. Because make no mistake, the base game is a waiting room. The whole design points at one door.

The feature

That door is the Free Games bonus — a cash-collect free spins round, which by 2021 was already the house style for roughly nine out of ten new releases. Buckaneers Frenzy is a perfectly serviceable pirate slot that I’ll have forgotten by next week. The Wild-collect-and-upgrade feature is a solid, satisfying engine, and the 50,000x ceiling gives you a headline to dream on. But the 95.49% RTP is the sticking point: Blueprint’s own Fishin’ Frenzy: The Big Catch — same ReelTime studio, same cash-collect DNA — ships at up to ~96.12% in its top config, so you can find the house style done at friendlier odds without leaving the same stable. Paying that extra to the house here, for a game that isn’t doing anything its stablemates don’t, is a hard sell. Play the demo, enjoy the bonus, then go find better odds.
