Bison Bonanza

There’s a certain genre of slot that arrives with a lot of dust on its boots and a marketing line about the untamed American frontier, and Bison Bonanza (Blueprint Gaming, April 2022) is squarely that. I’ve spun a lot of these prairie-and-canyon grids, and this one is competent, occasionally loud, and ultimately a little familiar. Let me walk you through it.

Theme & presentation

Blueprint leans hard into the sun-baked Western vista here: red canyon walls, cacti, a big shaggy bison mascot, and a colour palette that genuinely does look nice at dusk. The symbols are the usual suspects, low-pay royals dressed up in wood-and-rope trim, higher-pay wildlife and frontier trinkets. It’s polished without being memorable. The audio is standard-issue twangy stuff that fades into the background within about ten spins. Pleasant. Not distinctive.

How it plays

First honest correction: despite the “5-reel” label floating around, this is a 6x5 grid with a Pay Anywhere (scatter-pays) mechanic, not classic paylines. You need eight or more matching symbols landing anywhere on the board to score. Wins cascade, matched symbols vanish, new ones drop, and you keep going until nothing lands. It’s the same cluster-adjacent rhythm you’ve met in a hundred “Bonanza”-suffixed games, and it works fine here. There’s also an optional Bison Bet that adds 25% to your stake to roughly double your bonus-trigger odds at the same RTP, a fair-value gamble if you’re chasing the feature.

The feature

The headline is the Free Spins round, triggered by landing four or more bonus (coin) scatters. You pick your poison from four options: 12 spins with x2-x100 multipliers, 8 spins with x4-x200, 5 spins with x8-x500, or a Mystery pick. During the feature, Multiplier symbols land on cascades and add together, then apply to the round’s total prize when the cascades finish, which is where the real damage gets done. There’s also a bonus buy: standard spins at 100x, or the Bison Wheel at 248x, which spins a three-tier wheel for 10-20 spins with guaranteed minimum (x2-x10) and maximum (x100-x500) multipliers. Solid, well-built, entirely predictable.

Verdict

Bison Bonanza is a perfectly serviceable cascade-and-multiplier slot that does nothing wrong and nothing new. The 10,000x ceiling and stacking multipliers give it genuine top-end teeth, but the 96.50% base RTP is merely average, below Blueprint’s own better efforts and well shy of, say, Big Bass Boom’s outlier ~97.97%. If you love Western grids and multiplier feature-picks, you’ll have a fine time. Everyone else has seen this before.
