Big Catch Bass Fishing Christmas

Blueprint took the Big Catch Bass Fishing template, glued a Santa hat on the fisherman, and shipped it in time for the December marketing calendar. I’ve spun enough of these seasonal reskins to know the drill before the reels even load, and this one doesn’t spring many surprises. Let’s get into it.

Theme & presentation

It’s a fishing slot with tinsel. The fisherman wild now wears a red-and-white hat, the reels sit against a frosty lakeside instead of a summer one, and there’s a jingle-bell lilt threaded through the usual plucky guitar. Symbols are the familiar tackle-box fare: rods, reels, floats, bait, plus the card royals doing their usual low-pay duty. It’s competent and clean, but let’s be honest, this is a wardrobe change, not a new game. If you’ve seen the base Big Catch Bass Fishing, you’ve seen 90% of this. Charming enough for a fortnight in December; forgettable in July.

How it plays

Standard 5x3 grid, 10 fixed paylines, bets from 0.10 up to 100 a spin. The base game is a fairly flat wait-for-the-bonus affair, which is the entire Big Bass / Big Catch design philosophy. Line wins tick over, the fisherman wild shows up to nudge the odd win, and you spend most of your session fishing for scatters rather than actual fish. It plays smoothly on mobile, no complaints on the mechanics, but the base game itself is a holding pattern.

The feature

The headline act is Pick a Fish leading into Free Games. Land 3, 4 or 5 scatters and you bank 10, 15 or 20 free spins respectively. Before spinning, Pick a Fish lets you choose an upgrade that skews the round. Inside the feature, the fisherman becomes a collector: he scoops up the cash values attached to fish symbols. Reel in more fishermen and you climb a collect trail, unlocking extra spins, further upgrades, and a multiplier that steps up 2x, then 3x, and eventually a 10x on collected cash prizes at the top milestone. There’s a Feature Buy too, roughly 100x the stake, if you can’t be bothered fishing for scatters. It’s a solid, proven mechanic, but it’s the same engine the whole series runs on.

Verdict

Here’s my gripe: 93% RTP is stingy, plain and simple. The industry hovers around 95-96%, and for context Reel Kingdom’s Big Bass Boom (under the Pragmatic Play banner) runs as high as ~97.97% in its top RTP tier, so this Christmas skin gives back close to five percentage points less over the long run, which is a lot of house edge for a Santa hat. The 4,000x ceiling is decent-not-dazzling, and the Pick a Fish feature is fun in the moment. But a mediocre RTP on a reskin is hard to forgive.
