Barbar

Right, let’s talk about Barbar. Pragmatic Play dropped this one in early October 2024, and I sat down with the demo fully expecting to know exactly how it would play before the first tumble finished. Reader, I was correct. If you’ve spun Gates of Olympus, Starlight Princess or Gates of Gatot Kaca, you’ve essentially already met this game — same skeleton, new coat of paint.

Theme & presentation

The dressing here is a muscle-bound barbarian shtick, all furs, axes and shouty men who look like they’ve never met a leg-day they didn’t skip. It’s fine. The artwork is crisp, the symbols are chunky and readable, and the soundtrack does that heroic-drums-and-horns thing that Pragmatic can produce in its sleep. It’s competent and it’s loud, but there’s nothing here I’ll remember by Thursday. Presentation-wise it’s a solid B — polished, generic, safe.

How it plays

Barbar runs on a 6x5 grid with a Scatter Pays engine: land 8 or more matching symbols anywhere in view and you’re paid, no lines to trace. Wins get eliminated, new symbols tumble in to fill the gaps, and it keeps cascading until nothing new pays. The hook, as ever with this template, is the multiplier symbols — landing at anywhere from 2x up to a spicy 1,000x. At the end of a tumble sequence, every visible multiplier value is added together and slapped onto your total win for that spin. When they cluster, it’s genuinely exciting. When they don’t — which is most of the time — you’re grinding through a lot of dead air.

The feature

The main event is the Free Spins round. Land 4 or more scatters and you kick off with 15 free spins. Land 3 or more scatters again during a tumble sequence and you bag another 5. The key twist is the global multiplier: during free spins, every multiplier symbol that’s part of a win gets banked into a running total that carries across the whole round, so late spins can detonate. There’s also an Ante Bet to boost scatter frequency and a Feature Buy if you’d rather skip the small-talk and pay your way straight in. Nothing you haven’t seen — but it works, and the global multiplier is what carries the tension.

Check the paytable before you play. This is average, not generous; it’s nowhere near the ~97.97% you’ll find on something like Big Bass Boom.
• Volatility: High, 5/5. Expect a bumpy, feast-or-famine ride.

Verdict

Barbar is a perfectly serviceable slot that does absolutely nothing to justify its existence over the dozen near-identical games that came before it. The math is proven, the multipliers still thrill when they align, and the 15,000x ceiling is enough to keep you dreaming. But it’s a reskin, and it knows it. If you love the Olympus formula, you’ll enjoy this. If you’re bored of it, Barbar won’t change your mind.
