Spain’s gambling culture is, above all, a lottery culture. For most Spaniards gambling means the shared ritual of the Christmas draw - El Gordo - and weekly tickets for La Primitiva, ONCE and the football Quiniela, far more than the casino floor. An estimated 70-90% of Spanish adults play the Christmas lottery each December, a communal tradition centuries older than today’s regulated online market, which is led by online slots and sports betting.
A centuries-old history
Spain’s lottery roots run deep. On 30 September 1763, King Carlos III signed a Royal Decree creating La Primitiva, one of Europe’s oldest lotteries (its first draw was held that December). The first Christmas draw of the Lotería Nacional was held in Cádiz on 22 December 1812, during the Peninsular War, as a way to raise funds without new taxes - and it has run largely without interruption since, making it one of the longest-running lotteries in the world. La Primitiva was later suspended for 123 years and revived by Royal Decree in 1985.
El Gordo: a national event
The modern Christmas draw, the Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad, takes place every 22 December and is widely described as the world’s largest lottery by total prize payout (around €2.7bn in prizes in recent years). Tickets are sold as décimos (tenths), and it is common for families, workplaces, bars and villages to share numbers - which is why a single winning number can pour tens of millions into one small town. Children from Madrid’s San Ildefonso school famously sing out the winning numbers and prizes.
What Spaniards play online
Beyond lotteries, the regulated online market has matured. In Q2 2025, online casino accounted for roughly 53% of gross gaming revenue (slots leading the way), sports betting about 42%, with poker and bingo making up the small remainder. In-play and pre-match football betting is popular, reflecting Spain’s deep football culture, though online casino has overtaken betting as the largest vertical.

Attitudes
Spaniards broadly treat lotteries as harmless, sociable tradition rather than “gambling” in the problematic sense. Online betting and casino advertising, however, has drawn political concern, prompting tighter rules on marketing, bonuses and player protection in recent years. The DGOJ runs the Jugarbien responsible-gambling programme and a national self-exclusion register (RGIAJ).
