Hacksaw has made the Wild West its playground so many times now that I braced for another retread when Duel at Dawn loaded up. But this one earns its spurs. It’s a mechanically busy 5x5 shootout built around expanding wild reels and a genuinely fun head-to-head multiplier gimmick, and it can detonate into full chaos on any spin — no scatter permission required. It sits comfortably in the upper-mid tier of Hacksaw’s catalogue: not a landmark like Wanted or Le Bandit, but a sharp, replayable grinder that knows exactly what it is. Theme & presentation

Sun-scorched canyon, a lone silhouette in a duster coat, tumbleweed and revolver-chamber flourishes — Hacksaw’s art team hits the frontier brief without breaking a sweat. It’s polished rather than surprising. The palette is all dusty ochre and dawn-orange, the symbols are clean, and the whole thing has that signature Hacksaw crispness where nothing feels cheap. Audio is where it lifts: a twangy, tension-building spaghetti-western score that swells when a duel kicks off, plus satisfying gunshot cracks when wilds spray across the grid. It’s atmospheric without being annoying on the hundredth spin, which matters on a slot this grindy.

How it plays

You’re on a 5-reel, 5-row grid paying 19 ways, left to right across adjacent reels. Standard fare on the surface. The base game, I’ll be honest, drags. Dead spins are frequent and the low-pay symbols pay peanuts, so you’re fishing hard for the two mechanics that actually matter. Duel at Dawn is a proper high-volatility brawler with two well-designed mechanics that genuinely play off each other — the shooting wilds feeding DuelReel multipliers is a smart, moreish loop. The base game is a slog and I won’t pretend otherwise; this is a slot you tolerate the dead spins for, hunting the shootouts.
